It is raining and traffic is heavy. Using the Nebraska manual's following-distance rule, what is the least following time you should keep?
A follows B in rain while other traffic occupies the road. A fixed roadside marker gives a reference for counting the gap.
Correct answer: Five seconds: three seconds plus one second for each of the two adverse conditions.
Why
Wet pavement makes stopping distances longer and can cause hydroplaning, and rain also makes it harder to see. Heavy traffic gives you more things to react to at once. The manual also tells you to increase your following distance in snow and ice.
