Freeways & High-Speed RoadsStandalone practice
On the interstate, you keep a 3-second gap behind the car ahead. Another driver changes lanes into that gap. What should you do?
C is between A and B in the right interstate lane after entering A’s following gap. A fixed roadside sign is visible beside the shoulder.
Correct answer: Ease off the gas until you again have at least 3 seconds behind the new car.
Why
At interstate speeds, your vehicle covers a long distance while you react and brake. The manual adds one more second to the 3-second minimum for each problem, such as rain or heavy traffic. Other drivers will sometimes move into your space; let them in calmly, then rebuild your gap.
