You are on a highway in heavy rain, and water is standing on the pavement. What is the best way to keep your tires from hydroplaning?
Standing water covers parts of the highway pavement around A. The card identifies heavy rain.
Correct answer: Slow down, because at higher speeds the tires can ride on a thin film of water.
Why
When the tires lose contact with the pavement, steering and braking stop working well, and the car can slide even on a straight road. The faster you go, the easier it is for water to build up under the tires. In rain, the Nebraska manual also advises a longer following distance and low-beam headlights.
