Passing target: 80% (32/40)
Red lights start to flash at a railroad crossing ahead. There is no stop line or gate, and no train is in sight yet. Which stop follows New Hampshire law?
A is approaching a railroad crossing from farther back on the road. Red lights flash below the crossbuck. There is no gate, stop line or train in view, and no stopping distance is marked.
Correct answer: Stop about 30 feet from the nearest rail, and wait there until the lights stop flashing
Why
A train overhangs the rails and cannot stop quickly, so a car that stops too close can be hit. A stop no farther than 50 feet back keeps you close enough to see the tracks and to be seen. A train can be closer and faster than it looks, so never cross while the lights flash, and never drive around a lowered gate.
