Passing target: 80% (32/40)
You are about 150 feet from a railroad crossing when the red lights start to flash and the gate arm begins to come down. You do not see a train yet, and you think you can get across first. What must you do?
A approaches a single-track crossing from about 150 feet away. No train is visible, but the red lamps on the crossbuck mast have started flashing and the gate is beginning to lower; the gate position is enlarged in a detail.
Correct answer: Stop before the crossing and wait until the gate is up and the lights stop flashing
Why
A train cannot swerve, and it needs a very long distance to stop, so a driver who races it has no margin for error. Under RSA 265:48, when a crossing signal flashes or a gate is lowered, you must stop between 15 and 50 feet from the nearest rail. Wait until the gate is fully up and the lights are off, and then look both ways before you cross.
