You are in the left-turn lane. The signal shows a steady red light and a green arrow pointing left. A pedestrian is still finishing a crossing of the street you are turning into. What should you do?
A waits in a northbound left-turn lane. Its signal shows a circular red light with a green left arrow; B is finishing the marked crossing of the street to A’s left.
Correct answer: Wait for the pedestrian to clear your path, then complete the left turn
Why
A green arrow shown with a red light is usually a protected turn, when oncoming traffic is held by its own red light, so you need not wait for gaps in it. You must still yield to pedestrians who are lawfully in the crosswalk and to any vehicle still in the intersection. A red left arrow, by contrast, means you must stay stopped and may not turn left until a later signal allows the turn.
