You are stopped in a left-turn lane. The signal for your lane shows a steady red left arrow, while the through lanes have a green circular light. What may you do?
A is stopped behind the line in a lane marked with a left-turn arrow and ONLY. B is in the adjacent through lane. A cross street is visible ahead. The signal inset shows a steady red left arrow for A and a green circular light for through traffic.
Correct answer: Stay stopped, and do not turn left until a green arrow or other signal allows it.
Why
Arrow signals control only the movement they point to, so a green light for through traffic does not allow a turn against a red arrow. Oncoming traffic often has a green light at the same time, which is why the turn is held. Wait behind the stop line so you do not block the crosswalk.
