Passing target: 80% (32/40)
You drive at 30 mph toward a green light. It turns steady yellow when your front bumper is only about 15 feet from the stop line, and the intersection is clear. What should you do?
A approaches a clear intersection at 30 mph as the circular light turns yellow. Its front bumper is about one car length, or 15 feet, before the white stop line.
Correct answer: Continue through with care at your speed, because you will enter before the red
Why
At 30 mph a car moves about 44 feet each second, and an alert driver needs about three-quarters of a second to 1 second to see a change and about the same time to move a foot to the brake. So a driver who is far back from the line should stop for a yellow, but a driver who is only a few feet away should continue. Watch how long a light has been green as you come near, so that you are ready for either choice.
