It is noon on a cloudy day. Light rain begins, so you turn on your windshield wipers. You can still see clearly for more than 500 feet. What does New Jersey law require for your lights?
A drives in daylight on a wet road with light rain streaks. The card states that it is noon, the wipers are on and visibility exceeds 500 feet.
Correct answer: Headlights, because you are using your wipers for rain, whatever the visibility.
Why
New Jersey requires lighted headlights from a half hour after sunset to a half hour before sunrise, whenever rain, snow or other moisture makes you use your wipers, and whenever smoke, fog or other conditions keep you from clearly seeing people and vehicles 500 feet ahead. Each condition is enough by itself. Headlights help other drivers see you in gray daytime rain, and parking or auxiliary lights cannot legally replace them.
