On a two-lane road, an oncoming car suddenly crosses into your lane. You cannot stop in time. To your right is a grass shoulder with bushes beyond it. What is your best choice?
B approaches head-on in A’s lane on a two-lane road. A clear grass shoulder lies on A’s right with low bushes beyond it.
Correct answer: Steer to the right, away from the oncoming car, even if that takes you off the road.
Why
Driving off the road usually gives you more control than skidding, and bushes or shrubs give way far more than a car or a tree. If you cannot avoid a hit, try to make it a glancing blow rather than a head-on impact. Every inch you steer away from the center of the oncoming vehicle lowers the force of the crash.
