Passing target: 80% (40/50)
You are on a one-way street with three lanes and want to turn left onto another one-way street with three lanes. The turn is allowed and the way is clear. Which lanes should you use?
Two one-way streets meet, each with three lanes. Road arrows show eastbound approach traffic and northbound receiving traffic; no turn path or preferred lane is selected.
Correct answer: Approach in the left lane, and turn into the left lane of the new street.
Why
When a left turn involves a one-way street, New Jersey law requires the approach in the left-most lane that is open to your direction. The turn should end, as nearly as possible, in the left lane of the street you enter. This keeps your path short and predictable, so drivers beside you know where you will go. Signal at least 100 feet before the turn and watch for pedestrians crossing the street you enter.
