You park facing uphill on a street with a curb. Your car has an automatic transmission. How should you leave it?
A faces uphill beside a curb on its right. A side-profile inset shows which direction rises, and the question image does not select a wheel setting.
Correct answer: Wheels turned away from the curb, parking brake set, and the car in park.
Why
Facing downhill, the wheel direction reverses: turn the wheels toward the curb and use park, or reverse with a manual transmission. New Jersey law requires an unattended vehicle on a grade to have its brakes set, its engine stopped and its wheels turned to the curb or side of the road. Turned wheels are a backup in case the brake slips, so the car rolls into the curb instead of into traffic.
