Heavy rain has left standing water on a three-lane highway. You are driving at 50 mph in the right lane. Which choice best lowers your risk of hydroplaning?
A is in the right lane at 50 mph during heavy rain. Patches of standing water are visible across all three lanes; no lane is selected in the question image.
Correct answer: Slow down, and move to the center lane if you can, since it is usually the highest part.
Why
In hydroplaning, the tires ride up on a film of water. It can start at about 35 mph, and above about 55 mph the tires may leave the road surface completely, so braking and steering no longer work. To lower the risk, slow down in heavy rain, standing water or slush, and do not drive on bald or badly worn tires. In a heavy storm, the manual suggests using the highest part of the road, such as the center lane of a multilane highway.
