You will turn right from a two-lane street onto a four-lane street that has two lanes going your way. No cars are parked along your curb. How should you position your car for the turn?
A approaches an intersection on a two-lane street. Its planned right turn enters a four-lane street with two lanes in each direction and no parked cars at the corner.
Correct answer: Keep close to the right curb as you approach, and stay close to it through the turn.
Why
New Jersey law requires the approach for a right turn and the turn itself to be made as close as practicable to the right curb or edge of the road. This leaves no gap on your right for another vehicle to slip into while you turn. A wide swing, or a turn that ends in a far lane, puts your car where other drivers do not expect it. Signal at least 100 feet before the turn and check for pedestrians and bicyclists on your right.
