You are stopped at a red light and want to turn right. No sign prohibits the turn. A pedestrian is crossing the street you will turn into, and a moped with a green light is coming from your left on that street. What must you do?
A is stopped at a circular red signal before a right turn. A helmeted moped rider B approaches from A’s left under green while pedestrian C crosses the street A would enter; no sign prohibits the turn.
Correct answer: Stay stopped until the pedestrian has crossed and the moped has passed, then turn.
Why
New Jersey allows a right turn on red unless a sign prohibits it, but only after a full stop and a check of traffic in all directions. The law then requires you to yield to vehicles moving in the direction of your turn and to stop and stay stopped for pedestrians crossing the street you are turning into. The manual warns that bicycles and mopeds are hard to see and may have a green light. Many turning crashes happen when drivers watch only for cars and miss smaller road users.
