Passing target: 80% (40/50)
You drive on a road with one lane in each direction. A bicyclist is riding ahead in your lane, and oncoming traffic keeps you from moving into the other lane. What does New Jersey's Safe Passing Law require?
A follows a cyclist near the right side of its lane on a two-lane road. C approaches in the opposing lane, preventing A from moving into that lane to pass.
Correct answer: At least 4 feet of space; if you can't, slow to 25 mph or less and pass only when safe.
Why
On a road with a second lane in your direction, the first step is to move into a lane that is not next to the rider. The same law protects pedestrians, skateboarders, scooter riders and people in wheelchairs on the road. A violation that causes bodily injury brings a $500 fine and 2 points; with no injury, the fine is $100.
