Passing target: 80% (40/50)
You are driving at night on a dark rural road with your low beams on. How should you choose your speed?
A drives along a dark rural road on low beams. The illuminated pool ends ahead, with dark roadway beyond it.
Correct answer: Drive slowly enough that you can stop within the distance your headlights show.
Why
Nearly 90 percent of driving decisions depend on what you see, and at night you can see only as far as your headlights reach. The manual's night stopping table assumes a slower reaction time of 1.5 seconds; at 50 mph it gives a total stopping distance of about 302 feet. If something appears at the edge of your headlight range, you must be able to stop before you reach it, so drive more slowly than in daylight and allow bigger safety margins.
