Passing target: 80% (40/50)
At 50 mph, your right wheels drift off the pavement onto a lower gravel shoulder. There is traffic in the lane to your left. What should you do?
A straddles the pavement edge with its right wheels on a lower gravel shoulder. Another car travels in the lane to A’s left, and the card gives A’s initial speed as 50 mph.
Correct answer: Ease off the gas, stay on the shoulder, and steer back gently at 25 mph or less.
Why
Many run-off-road crashes happen when a driver panics and turns hard back toward the pavement. The manual's three steps are to slow down, get the car under control, and turn slowly back onto the road. A quarter turn of the steering wheel at low speed lets the tires climb the pavement edge without throwing the car into the next lane.
