Passing target: 80% (40/50)
You are driving on a two-lane road when a car behind you pulls out to pass you on the left. What should you do?
B is overtaking A in the opposing lane on a two-lane road. A remains in its right-hand travel lane.
Correct answer: Stay in your lane, keep to the right, and ease off the gas until the car is well ahead.
Why
When someone passes you, New Jersey law requires you to give way to the right and not to increase your speed until the pass is complete. The manual adds that you should stay in your own lane and ease your speed so that the pass is easier to finish. On a two-lane road the passing car is in the oncoming lane, so every extra second of the pass adds danger. Return to your normal speed once the other car is well ahead.
