Passing target: 70% (21/30)
On a narrow street lined with parked cars, a bicyclist rides in the center of your lane instead of at the right edge. What should you do?
A follows bicyclist B in the narrow lane beside two parked cars. B is near the center of the space available for moving traffic; there is no separate bicycle lane.
Correct answer: Stay behind the rider until you can pass safely, since the rider may use the whole lane.
Why
Bicyclists usually ride on the right, but the manual says they may take the whole lane when they must, for example when they are about to turn left, when a narrow street leaves no room to share, or when they must steer around hazards. New Mexico law asks riders to keep right only as far as practicable. Be patient: a short wait behind a bicycle costs very little time.
