In the middle of a narrow city travel lane, you see a painted bicycle symbol with two arrow-shaped chevrons above it. What does this marking tell you?
A follows B in an ordinary narrow travel lane with no separate bicycle lane. A white bicycle and two chevrons are painted in the lane and shown enlarged.
Correct answer: Bicyclists may use the whole lane, and drivers yield to them.
Why
This marking, called a sharrow or shared lane marking, is painted where a lane is too narrow for a car and a bicycle to travel side by side. It encourages bicyclists to use the whole lane and tells drivers to slow down and yield to them. Pass only when the roadway is wide enough for the rider to move right, and keep well clear when you do.
