Passing target: 70% (21/30)
You are stopped at a crossing that has two sets of tracks. A long freight train passes on the near track. As its last car goes by, what should you do before you start across?
A waits before two sets of railroad tracks. The near crossing is clear after a freight train has passed; the train is outside the visible area.
Correct answer: Wait until the train is well down the track, then check that no train comes on the other track.
Why
A passing train blocks your view of the other tracks, and a second train can come from either direction. Crossings with more than one track often have a sign that shows how many tracks there are, but some do not. Under NMSA 66-7-341, you must stay stopped while a signal or gate is active or a train is close, and you may go only when you can clear the whole crossing safely.
