You are stopped at a red light, and a text message appears on the phone in your hand. Under New Mexico law, what may you do?
Correct answer: Read it after you pull off the road and stop where the car can safely stay
Why
NMSA 66-7-374 bans reading, viewing or manually typing a text message on a handheld device while driving. The exceptions are a call for medical or other emergency help and a licensed amateur radio operator using an amateur radio. Systems built into the car and voice-operated or hands-free devices are not covered. Even a short look away can hide a stopped car or a person crossing.
