Passing target: 70% (14/20)
Driver A enters an expressway from a long acceleration lane. Driver B enters from a very short acceleration lane, and heavy traffic keeps B from reaching expressway speed before the lane ends. How should their entries differ?
Two separate northbound expressway entrances are compared. A has a long lane beside a gap in traffic; B has a much shorter lane with closely spaced cars alongside it.
Correct answer: A merges at traffic speed; B stops, waits for a large gap, then enters and speeds up quickly
Why
A merge from a stop needs a much larger gap than a merge at traffic speed, because traffic on the expressway closes on you fast. Both drivers signal and look over the shoulder for traffic before they enter. If other cars also use a short entrance lane, stop only when you must and merge as soon as it is safe.
