You drive on a busy street. The next cross street has no traffic light, and traffic ahead of you has stopped. If you move forward, your car would stop across the cross street. What should you do?
A approaches an unsignalized cross street. Stopped cars B and C fill the lane beyond it, leaving less than a car length of clear space after the intersection.
Correct answer: Stop before the cross street and keep it clear until there is room ahead.
Why
A car that is stuck across an intersection blocks cross traffic, pedestrians and emergency vehicles, and it can start gridlock. Look past the intersection before you enter: if traffic is backed up on the far side and your whole car will not fit, wait. Watch for side streets and offset intersections too, so that you do not block another street.
