On a three-lane highway, you drive in the center lane. A car is beside you on the left and a truck is beside you on the right, both at your speed. How should you manage your space?
A travels in the center lane of a three-lane highway. Silver car B is alongside on the left and truck C is alongside on the right; the caption states that all three are moving at the same speed.
Correct answer: Ease off the gas to drop back, so you have open space on at least one side.
Why
A space cushion gives you time and room to react when something goes wrong. If the car ahead stops suddenly or debris falls into your lane, you may need to change lanes or pull over at once. You can do that only if you have left escape room to your left or right, as well as a safe gap ahead.
