Your car has a backup camera. You have stopped beside the car ahead of an open space and are ready to back into it. How should you watch while you back up?
A is stopped beside parked car B, ahead of an open curbside parking space. The card states that A has a backup camera; no observation posture or parking route is shown.
Correct answer: Look over both shoulders first, then back slowly while you look through the rear window.
Why
Pedestrians, bicyclists and oncoming traffic can move into your path while you back up, and mirrors and cameras leave areas you cannot see. The manual says that you, the driver, are responsible for safe operation even when the car has cameras, sensors or a self-parking feature. Parallel parking is part of every New York road test, so practice this routine until it is a habit.
