Weather, Visibility & EmergenciesStandalone practice
Your right wheels drift off the pavement onto a soft shoulder that is a few inches lower than the road. Nothing blocks the shoulder ahead. In which order should you act?
A’s right wheels run along an unobstructed soft shoulder below the pavement. A side-view detail shows the drop from road to shoulder.
Correct answer: Ease off the gas and brake gently, check the traffic behind you, then steer back
Why
Do not swerve or jerk the wheel when your wheels leave the pavement; a sudden turn at speed is how drivers lose control in this situation. Hold the wheel firmly and let the car slow down on the shoulder. A drop at the pavement edge is much easier to cross at low speed.
