Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You drive at 45 mph on a four-lane highway with two lanes in each direction. The speed limit is 55 mph. When may you drive in the left lane on your side of the road?
A travels in the right lane of a four-lane highway with two lanes in each direction. The card states that A is traveling 45 mph where the posted limit is 55 mph.
Correct answer: When you pass another vehicle or get ready to turn left
Why
When slower traffic stays right, faster drivers can pass on the left, where other drivers expect them. A slow car in the left lane makes drivers behind it follow too closely or pass on the right, and both raise the crash risk. Where a Slower Traffic Keep Right sign is posted, North Carolina law also bans slow travel in the lane next to the median when it holds up traffic, except to prepare for a left turn.
