Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You drive at the posted 35 mph limit on a paved city street with a marked center line. Ahead, children play on the sidewalk between parked cars, and a ball bounces toward the street. What should you do?
A travels at the posted 35 mph limit on a paved street with a marked center line. Two children are on the sidewalk in the gap between parked cars B and C, and a ball is near the curb; an inset shows the ball more clearly.
Correct answer: Slow down below 35 mph now, and be ready to stop if a child runs out
Why
North Carolina has two speed rules at the same time: do not go over the posted limit, and do not go faster than is reasonable and prudent for the conditions. Conditions change as you drive from open country into neighborhoods and school zones. Children can come out from between parked cars with no warning, so treat a ball near the road as a sign that a child may follow it.
