Passing target: 80% (24/30)
On a dry road, the car ahead of you passes a road sign. You start to count "one-thousand-one, one-thousand-two." Your front bumper reaches the same sign when you say "one-thousand-one." What does this tell you?
A follows B on a dry two-lane road. A’s front is aligned with a roadside sign, and the card states that only one second has passed since B passed that same point.
Correct answer: You are too close; drop back until you count at least two seconds
Why
Following too closely is a leading cause of crashes, and rear-end crashes are among the most frequent crashes on interstates. The count needs a fixed point, such as a sign or a pole beside the road. Two seconds is the minimum for good conditions; on wet pavement the handbook tells you to allow at least twice the normal following distance.
