A bicyclist ahead of you gives a left-turn hand signal. Then the rider moves from the right edge toward the center of the lane before an intersection. What should you do?
B rides north ahead of A toward an intersection, away from the right edge and near the lane center. B’s left arm extends horizontally, shown clearly in an enlarged signal detail.
Correct answer: Slow down and give the rider room, because a bicyclist may turn left like a car.
Why
North Dakota law gives a person who rides a bicycle on a roadway the rights and duties of a driver. The rider normally stays as near to the right side as practicable, but a left turn needs a move toward the center, as it does for a car. Most crashes between cars and bicycles happen at intersections, so watch for hand signals and give bicyclists extra time there.
