You are driving down a long hill. To save fuel, a passenger suggests that you shift into neutral and coast. What does North Dakota law say?
Correct answer: Coasting downhill in neutral is not allowed, so keep the vehicle in gear.
Why
In gear, the engine helps to slow the vehicle, so the brakes do less work and stay cool. In neutral, the brakes must do everything and can overheat and fade on a long hill, and you cannot speed up quickly to avoid a hazard. On a steep hill, choose a lower gear to control your speed.
