Light snow has made the highway slippery. Your car has snow tires, and you are following a pickup. How much following distance should you keep?
A follows pickup B on a road with light snow. The card states that A has snow tires, and a roadside sign provides a fixed point for a following-time count.
Correct answer: Four seconds or more; on snow, about twice your dry-road gap.
Why
On snow or ice your tires have less grip, so each stop takes more road, and the vehicle ahead can slide or stop suddenly. The manual lists other cases that need four seconds or more: behind a motorcycle or a large vehicle that blocks your view, with a trailer or a heavy load, and when a driver behind you wants to pass.
