Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You are in the acceleration lane at an entrance to I-94. Traffic in the right lane moves steadily at about 70 mph, below the posted limit, and a safe gap is coming up beside you. About how fast should you be going when you merge into it?
A travels in an Interstate acceleration lane beside a safe gap between B and C in the right through lane. The card states that through traffic moves at about 70 mph; A’s speed is not given.
Correct answer: About 70 mph, because a merge works best at the speed of the traffic.
Why
When your speed is close to the speed of the traffic, a gap stays open long enough for you to move into it. A car that enters far below that speed forces other drivers to brake or swerve, and one that enters far above it closes on the car ahead. Look for your gap early, signal, check your mirror and blind spot, and remember that you must still yield to vehicles on the main roadway.
