On a four-lane highway, you have driven next to a car in the lane on your left for about a mile. You both drive at the same speed. What should you do?
A and silver car B travel side by side in the two same-direction lanes of a four-lane highway, with B to A’s left. The card states that they have maintained equal speeds for about a mile.
Correct answer: Change your speed within the limit so that you are ahead of it or behind it.
Why
Space to your sides gives you a place to go if a car ahead stops or another driver drifts into your lane. When you stay beside a vehicle, you may be in that driver's blind spot, and you have no room on that side to escape. Keep a space cushion on both sides, and give extra side room to large trucks, bicycles and pedestrians.
