Your light is green. Past the intersection, traffic is stopped, and there is not enough room for your whole car beyond the far crosswalk. What should you do?
A faces a green light before a marked intersection. Cars B and C are stopped just past the far crosswalk, leaving no room for A’s whole car beyond it.
Correct answer: Wait behind the stop line until there is room for your car on the far side.
Why
Ohio law does not allow you to enter an intersection, a marked crosswalk or a railroad crossing unless there is room on the other side for your whole vehicle, even when the signal lets you go (ORC 4511.712). A car stuck in the intersection blocks cross traffic, pedestrians and emergency vehicles when the light changes. Wait at the line, and go when the traffic ahead has moved far enough.
