Passing target: 75% (30/40)
You are in a freeway acceleration lane with your signal on. A truck in the right lane of the freeway is next to you, and your acceleration lane will end soon. Who has the right-of-way, and what should you do?
A signals to merge from an acceleration lane that tapers to an end. Truck B is beside A in the freeway’s right through lane; no safe merging path is selected in the question image.
Correct answer: The truck does; adjust your speed to fit into a safe gap in the freeway traffic.
Why
The Ohio manual lists drivers already on a limited-access highway among those you must yield to when you are on the entrance ramp or acceleration lane. Use the lane to reach the speed of traffic, look over your shoulder and in your mirror for a gap, and change your speed to fit into it. Your turn signal does not give you the right-of-way, and a merge into a lane that is not clear is a lane change that the law does not allow (ORC 4511.33).
