Passing target: 75% (30/40)
On a two-lane, two-way road with a broken yellow center line, you want to pass a slow car that is not turning. Which plan follows Ohio law?
A follows slow car B on a two-lane, two-way road with a broken yellow center line. The opposing lane is empty in the visible scene, and B is not turning.
Correct answer: Pass on the left when the oncoming lane is clear for the whole pass, and return when safely clear.
Why
Ohio law says the normal pass is on the left at a safe distance, and you may not return to the right until you are safely clear of the passed vehicle (ORC 4511.27). On a two-lane road, you may pass on the right only when the vehicle ahead is turning left, and never by driving off the roadway (ORC 4511.28). If the pass uses the oncoming lane, you must be back in your lane before you come within 200 feet of an oncoming vehicle (ORC 4511.29).
