Passing target: 75% (30/40)
At an intersection on a two-lane road, the car ahead of you stops with its left signal on. It waits for oncoming traffic. There is a wide paved shoulder on your right. What should you do?
A follows stopped car B at a two-lane-road intersection. B signals left and waits for oncoming car C; a wide paved shoulder lies beyond the white edge line on A’s right.
Correct answer: Wait behind it until it turns, because you may not pass by using the shoulder.
Why
In Ohio, the shoulder is not part of the roadway, and the law does not allow a pass by driving off the roadway (ORC 4511.01 and 4511.28). The shoulder is for emergency stops, and people, bicycles and disabled vehicles often use it. A pass on the right is allowed only when the vehicle ahead is turning left or the road has two or more lanes in your direction, and only on the pavement of the travel lanes.
