You follow a school bus on a two-lane road. The bus comes to a railroad crossing that has only crossbuck signs. No train is in sight. What should you expect the bus to do?
A follows school bus B on a two-lane road toward a railroad crossing marked by crossbuck signs. There are no gates, crossing lights or visible train, and the bus has no extended stop arm.
Correct answer: The bus will stop before the tracks to look and listen, so be ready to stop behind it.
Why
Rear-end crashes happen when a driver does not expect a bus or a fuel truck to stop at an empty crossing. The Ohio manual says to increase your following distance behind vehicles that must stop at railroad crossings. Do not pass them near the crossing. Ohio law does not allow driving on the left side of the road within 100 feet of a railroad crossing (ORC 4511.30). At a crossing with signs that show it is exempt, these vehicles do not have to stop (ORC 4511.63).
