Observation, Speed & SpaceStandalone practice
You drive on a paved county road in normal conditions. You have not seen a speed limit sign, and the county has not posted a different limit for its roads. What is the maximum lawful speed?
Correct answer: 55 mph
Why
A board of county commissioners can set its own limit for all unposted county roads, and the state then posts that limit on signs at the county line. Watch for these signs when you enter a new county. The 55 mph limit is only a maximum: gravel, dust, curves, hills, farm equipment and bad weather can require a much lower speed under the basic speed rule.

On a clear, dry day you drive at 35 mph in the right lane of a four-lane highway where traffic moves at about 60 mph. There is no hazard ahead, and a long line of cars forms behind you. Which statement is true? You follow a loaded tractor-trailer on a wet highway. Why should you keep more space behind it than you might think that you need?It is raining. You choose a sign post ahead. The rear of the car in front passes the post, and you reach the post as you count "one thousand two." What should you do?A dog runs into the road ahead of you. Your car keeps moving at the same speed while you see the danger and move your foot to the brake pedal. Which parts of total stopping distance does your car cover before the brakes start to work? You drive on a divided highway that is posted at 70 mph. Heavy rain starts, and you can see only a short distance ahead. What speed does Oklahoma's basic speed rule require?Early on a school morning, you drive on a highway outside any city or town. You enter a properly marked school zone while it is in effect. The signs do not post a different school-zone limit. What is the highest speed that Oklahoma law allows here?
