Passing target: 80% (16/20)
On a clear, dry day you drive at 35 mph in the right lane of a four-lane highway where traffic moves at about 60 mph. There is no hazard ahead, and a long line of cars forms behind you. Which statement is true?
On a clear four-lane highway, A travels in the right eastbound lane with cars B, C and D queued behind. The card gives A’s speed as 35 mph, normal traffic about 60 mph and no hazard ahead.
Correct answer: You break the law, because you impede normal traffic for no safety reason.
Why
The basic speed rule works in both directions: a safe speed is not too fast and not too slow for the conditions. A very slow car makes other drivers pass and change lanes, which increases the chance of a crash. A lower speed is correct in rain, fog, heavy traffic or a work zone. If you cannot keep up with the safe flow of traffic, the manual says not to use the expressway.
