You drive through standing water on a highway. The steering suddenly feels light, and you can tell that the tires have started to ride on the water. What should you do?
A travels through standing water on a two-lane highway in rain. The card says the steering feels light and the tires have started to ride on the water; no corrective route is shown.
Correct answer: Ease off the gas, hold the wheel steady, and do not brake hard or turn sharply.
Why
Hydroplaning happens when a film of water lifts the tires off the road, so you lose traction and need more distance to stop. Prevent it by slowing down whenever the road is wet; wide tires can hydroplane even at lower speeds. In a heavy downpour, slow down or pull off the road until the rain eases.
