Passing target: 80% (16/20)
You brake on an icy road, and the rear of your car starts to slide to the right. No other vehicle is near, and the road has room on both sides. What should you do?
A is alone on an icy two-lane road with clear space on both sides. A white arrow behind A points toward the driver’s right, showing the rear sliding after braking; it does not show a steering correction.
Correct answer: Take your foot off the brake and steer gently to the right.
Why
Sudden braking makes a skid worse, and very little can be done once a skid starts, so prevention is the best skid control. Steer into the skid only when that does not take you off the road, into an object or into oncoming traffic. For example, do not steer into the other lane when oncoming cars are there.
