On a two-lane highway, a sudden downpour becomes so heavy that you can barely see the edge of the road or the car ahead, even at a low speed. What is the safest action?
A follows B on a two-lane highway in a heavy downpour. Rain and haze obscure B and the road edges ahead; the card says the view remains too short even at a low speed, and a broad paved shoulder lies on the right.
Correct answer: Signal, pull completely off the road to a safe place, and wait for the rain to ease.
Why
Oklahoma's basic speed rule requires a speed at which you can stop within the clear distance ahead, so heavy rain can call for a speed far below the limit. When even a low speed is not safe, pull off the road. Stop well away from moving traffic, because drivers behind you may not see a car that stops in the lane.
