Passing target: 16 correct signs and 16 correct rules (TLA practice targets)
You are already inside an intersection on a two-way road when an ambulance approaches from behind with flashing red lights and its siren sounding. The route straight ahead is clear. What should you do?
Blue car A is already proceeding straight through a clear intersection on a two-way road. A white-and-blue box ambulance approaches from behind with red warning lights flashing and its siren sounding.
Correct answer: Clear the intersection, then pull over to the right
Why
Because you are already inside the intersection, clear it straight ahead when safe, then signal and stop parallel to the road as near as practicable to its right-hand curb or edge. Keep the intersection clear and do not move onto the shoulder, which an emergency vehicle may use. If you have not entered an intersection, do not enter merely to follow this already-inside example. Check for additional emergency vehicles before rejoining traffic.
Verified against Highway Traffic Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8 · Current section 159(1)(a): approaching emergency-vehicle duty; standstill as near as practicable to right-hand curb/edge, parallel and clear of intersections. Ordinary two-way-road scope.
