Passing target: 16 correct signs and 16 correct rules (TLA practice targets)
On an ordinary two-way road with one lane in each direction, may you drive left of centre to pass while approaching within 30 metres of a level railway crossing?
Blue A follows silver B toward a railway crossing on a road with one lane in each direction. A red-and-white Canadian crossbuck marks the tracks. No passing path or stop instruction is shown.
Correct answer: No, it is not allowed on this approach
Why
Do not move left of centre to pass on this 30-metre approach to a level railway crossing. HTA section 149(2) has specified exceptions, including one-way roads, unequal marked directional lane counts and qualifying road-service operations; this question excludes those cases. Pedestrian crossovers have a separate rule in section 140(3) about passing from behind within 30 metres. Do not turn these different provisions into one unqualified ban on every possible pass near either crossing.
Verified against Highway Traffic Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8 · Sections 149(1)(b),(2): left-of-centre restriction on railway approach and enumerated exceptions;140(3) is the distinct pedestrian-crossover approach rule.
