Passing target: 80% (28/35)
At night on an empty two-lane road, you use your high beams. You come up behind a slower pickup truck in your lane and plan to stay behind it. At what distance must you switch to low beams?
A approaches slower pickup B in the same lane on a dark two-lane road. A’s high-beam pool reaches toward B, and the card says A plans to remain behind it. The opposite lane is empty.
Correct answer: When you are 350 feet behind the truck
Why
Glare in a rearview or side mirror can blind the driver ahead as badly as oncoming lights. Oregon law lets you use high beams while you actually pass, but you must use low beams when you follow within 350 feet. When you are required to dim, also turn off fog lights and other extra lights, because they add glare.
