Passing target: 80% (28/35)
Rain has made the highway wet. You drive 45 mph and usually keep 4 seconds behind the car ahead. What should you do?
A follows B on a wet two-lane road in visible rain. The card states that A travels at 45 mph and normally keeps a four-second following gap; no safe wet-road interval is selected.
Correct answer: Increase the gap, because you need more distance to stop when wet
Why
Water between the tires and the pavement reduces grip, so braking and steering need more distance. The manual lists other times to add space as well: when it is hard to see, when you follow a motorcycle or bicycle, when a driver behind you wants to pass, and when you pull a trailer or carry a heavy load. Slow down too, because a lower speed also shortens your stopping distance.
